The Zimbabwean Head of State, Robert Mugabe, was appointed on Friday, 30th January by his peers in meeting in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as serving chairman of the African Union (AU).
He thus succeeds to his Mauritanian counterpart, Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz, who took the lead of the Union in January, 2014.
Showing his gratitude to his peers for choosing him, Mr. Mugabé declared this: « I humbly accept your collective decision, fully conscious of the heavy responsibility it implies ».
Known as a freedom fighter of the 90s, the new chairman of the AU has, in his occasional speech, hammered that « African resources belong to the Africans and nobody else » and it’s high time we recognized the key-role women play in the development of Africa.
« Today, we produce more tobacco than in the colonial time », added the latter.
In his speech highly appreciated by the audience, the Zimbabwean Head of State, besides, thanked Equatorial Guinea and his president for having accepted to organize in harry the AFCON 2015 he qualifies as « great event ».
Apparently struck by the age, 90 years old, the strong man of Zimbabwe still stands on his feet to manage the continental organization. Full success to Mugabe.
